Halos and pitchforks, Hamline Style

NAY to doing away with FYSEM. If nothing else, FYSEM offers first-years the opportunity to shake things up a bit. The subjects explored by FYSEMs are often important ones that fit in to the great liberal arts education that Hamline offers, but they’re not often subjects that get much attention. The courses provide students with ways to apply their education in a way that relates more tangibly to the outside world than many theory or survey courses.
If you don’t buy that, at least FYSEM gives students someone to say hello to during their first weeks on campus.

YAY to the idea of a full-time assistant professor. Hamline is a university that prides itself on its CLA, and this position can do nothing but help deliver a better liberal arts experience. Students are already encouraged to engage in a breadth of interdisciplinary activities and classes, so having a staff member whose position is, by nature, interdisciplinary, sounds like a great idea. We just hope that the snags the administration has hit while trying to find someone for the job won’t keep it from actually being created for the first time.

YAY to all the service learning spring break trips. We’re tired of wasting a week (and our money) on ridiculous trips that lead to bad decisions. Actually, we’re not, but we’re proud of those of us who make the decision to forgo the usual revelry of this week off to enact real change in the lives of those we’re too often removed from. We all know that the world has some hurts, people, and many Hamline students will be doing their part next week to patch some of them up.

NAY to HUSC elections. Again. We’re disappointed with the way the entire process was handled, and we’re disappointed with the voter turn out. That said, we did (in jest) encourage the campus not to vote for the very reason that the elections were being run poorly.
We don’t have a problem with the outcome, but the entire process has exposed a side of HUSC that we thought the campus would be free of this year. Hopefully next year will be different.

YAY to competitive rock, paper, scissors. Check out the Local section on page eight for the exciting play-by-play action!

NAY to people not writing in with suggestions for the Piper’s name. It’s easy folks, just write to oracle@hamline.edu with your suggestions for the Piper’s new first name. So far we’ve got a few, but we’d like to hear what you think.
Hey, maybe you think the piper shouldn’t have a first name. In that case, write us and tell us why you think we’re way off with this contest.
Either way, the winner gets a free T-shirt.

YAY to snow days! We know we enjoyed them, and admit it, so did you-- no matter how jam-packed your classes were with makeup content last week.

NAY to when snow days are announced (6:00a.m. the day of). Seriously, can’t the decision be made the night before, when the university knows we’ve received a foot of snow and the plows won’t be out until afternoon?

YAY to free transit on St. Patrick’s day. One bottling company (which shall remain unnamed) buys out the entire Metro Transit System for this lovely night to keep the streets safer. It seems like compassion, but in reality, the alcohol companies just know that people drink more if they’re alive.
