Frat hosts “Hoops” benefit
Hamline’s chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity is proud to be sponsoring “Hoops for Hunger 2007.” On March 13-15 at Hutton Arena, the fraternity is hosting a two-on-two basketball tournament. The event starts at 7 p.m. but teams should show up early to register. Registration fee will be strictly enforced but is quite reasonable. Ten dollars per team or four canned foods will get your team in the bracket. There will be a separate bracket for men’s and women’s teams and first-place winners will receive trophies. All proceeds will be donated to the local food shelf.
The event is the most recent in a string of successful fundraisers sponsored by Theta Chi. Last semester, Hamline’s lone fraternity co-sponsored a poker tournament to benefit the C.S.I. trips. First-place was an XBox system and the event had such a high turnout they had to turn away 20-30 students. Almost 80 poker playing Pipers took part in the poker tourney.
“We’re trying to scale up the size of our events,” said Theta Chi member and Hamline junior Scott Steiskal. “You have to throw a good event to get people to come out. You have to do more than pop a video in the VCR,” Steiskal went on.
The “Hoops for Hunger” bracket tourney is the conception of the fraternity’s Philanthropy Chairman John Swan. Swan was unavailable for comment but Steiskal articulated, “We [Theta Chi] try to make philanthropy part of what we do. We have the power in college to do things that benefit the surrounding community.”

Informative Hamline golf meeting
On Thursday, March 29, students interested in golf are convening for informative meeting in the Walker Field House Lobby. Golfers who are interested should show up at 11:30 a.m. Currently, there is no official golf team at Hamline but considering the interest displayed by students last year, Hamline may have enough golfers to field a team.
