Fraternity explains purpose, accomplishments
It has come to our attention here at Theta Chi that a negative image of us pervades the campus. Knowledge of us seems to be pieced together from random bits of information blown out of proportion or flat-out mistaken. With our character in question, we feel it necessary to set the record straight about ourselves and our fraternity.
First and foremost, we are a group of men dedicated to the pursuit of ideals. This is a commitment we take very seriously. By we, I don’t just mean the members here at Hamline, but also the 150,000 other undergraduate and alumnus brothers who have chosen this organization. This extensive network includes men from 131 institutions of higher learning and virtually every industry imaginable. Our local chapter has provided over 800 of those.
Although few people know much about us, we are the third-oldest organization at Hamline, predated only by the Oracle and The Liner. The Beta Kappa chapter has a rich history, important enough to warrant the existence of a display case devoted entirely to us at the International Headquarters. At our peak, over 70 undergrad brothers roamed the Hamline campus. We have put forward innumerable campus leaders over the decades ranging from sports captains, organization executives and HUSC officials.
Out of all of the organizations here at Hamline, few can offer anything comparable. With five committees under the authority of the executive board, we build leadership skills and experience every day. In addition, various national and regional conferences are held such as the Mid-Year Leadership Challenges conference which occurred just weeks ago here at Hamline. After graduation, the International Headquarters offers further leadership opportunities via working with chapters around the country.
Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, Theta Chi will be giving out a quarter of a million dollars in scholarship money over the next year, and half a million the year after that. Additionally, our strong focus on academics has resulted in the improvement of many brothers’ GPAs, and even retained a few who may have transferred or simply dropped out.
Most importantly, as brothers, we build lifelong bonds of friendship incomparable to any other organization. When one of our members was stabbed last year, the majority of the chapter rushed to the hospital to be with him. What other org. would do this for its members?
We admit that we do not always live up to our ideals. No one does. However, the persisting image of us on campus fails to provide, even in the most remote sense, an accurate portrayal of who we are. We are a group of men, bound by honor to strive toward the betterment of our world, our school, and ourselves. Voluntarily, we commit ourselves to these responsibilities and rewards, and we are proud to be known as Theta Chi. We have become better men because of Theta Chi.
