HUSC fails to overturn EAC
A motion to overturn a unanimous decision by HUSC’s Economic Affairs Committee failed in general assembly on Feb. 13.
The HU Programming council, a collective group formed by organizations Where’s the Fun?!, HEAT, Multicultural Alliance and HIRC appealed EAC’s Feb. 8 decision denying them $3,486 from the conference fund. The money was to send five student delegates to the National Association for Campus Activities conference, held in Nashville, Tenn. If the initial motion had passed, it would cut the amount of money left in the conference fund in half.
“No one would run their checking account that way,” HUSC treasurer Pete Winiecki said in an interview. Winiecki voted against overturning EAC.
During debate, the council amended their request down to $2,000. Despite the request’s reduction, the motion failed. It received 17 votes out of 27 cast. Motions to overturn EAC decision require a two-thirds roll-call majority.
At the initial meeting with EAC on Feb. 8, the committee voted 7-0 against the council’s initial application. Normally the organization would appeal to EAC the following week, however because the conference was the following weekend, Feb. 16-18, the council appealed directly to the general assembly.
Although they were denied money from HUSC, the students are still attending the conference, however, the money is coming from Kelly Krebs’ budget, Winiecki said.
