Entertainment news in brief
The other awards:
February is the season for love, muskrat hunting (in Minnesota, at least) and awards in Hollywood. As America gears up for the Oscars, there are also a score of other awards given out by organizations with acronyms you can’t define like BAFTA, AFI, and SAG (my initials, but contrary to popular belief, not given out in my honor). As a rule, the same movies win at each event so it’s a wonder why they even bother at all.
Two celebrities whose egos have already been stroked beyond belief with multiple wins and nominations this year are Helen Mirren for The Queen and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.
In music news:
Aside from awards, this month has been full of bands reuniting that nobody was really missing in the first place. Leading the way for has-beens everywhere, The Police returned in full force with a performance at the 49th annual Grammy awards. Although many critics are hailing their return, I was getting by just fine with Kevin’s cover-band Scrant onicity from NBC’s The Office.
Next, convinced that they really must be rockstars after landing a song on Guitar Hero II, Rage Against the Machine announced a headlining set at the Coachella Music Festival April 27-29. In typical rockstar fashion, the reunion will be a one-time-only event honestly aimed at destroying the Bush Administration.
Still, not to be outdone by a ragtag group of 90s misfits, Genesis (headed by Phil Collins) also announced their first tour in 15 years. The kick-off will be a free show in Rome for more than 400,000 fans on a first-come, first-serve basis. Now the biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether or not there are even 400,000 Genesis fans alive.
Saying goodbye:
Amongst all the happy reunions, there unfortunately remains one legend that simply cannot be revived-Anna Nicole Smith. But if you’re jonesing for more of the dearly departed TrimSpa spokeswoman you can check out her last film, Illegal Aliens, which will be released straight to DVD on May 22.
In it, Anna Nicole portrays a space alien who is told that she must save the planet. The movie is jam-packed with A-list Hollywood talent, the most notable of which is Joanie Laurer (a.k.a. the former wrestler Chyna). Although it’s not expected to enter the esteemed collection of Criterion films, it has all the makings of a cult classic and is sure to sell at least a dozen copies.
Potter news:
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is showing more than you probably ever wanted to see on February 27 when the play Equus opens at London’s Gielgud Theater. The story centers around Radcliffe’s character, a stable-boy who develops erotic feelings for a horse and, at times, appears completely naked. Racy promotional pictures circling the Internet have caused quite the stir amongst rabid parents who are convinced that a clothed Harry Potter is already tearing apart the moral fabric of this country, nevermind a naked one.
In related news, July 21, 2007 has been revealed as the release date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book in J. K. Rowling’s hit series. Concern is already starting to mount with critics who are wondering how people will deal with a newly treeless world filled with children who, once again, refuse to read.
