DeRcok captures MIAC player of the week honors
Although it has been a dismal season from week-to-week for Hamline men’s basketball, there are some bright spots. Sophomore Jon DeRock has earned MIAC Player of the Week honors, adding to what is turning out to be a solid career for the young guard. The accolade comes after DeRock averaged 29.0 points, nearly seven rebounds, and shot 67 percent from the field last week. DeRock has elevated his play this season and his play, as of late, has contributed to slim victories over Augsburg and Concordia.
In 2007, DeRock has reached or surpassed the 30-point mark twice. For the season, DeRock leads the MIAC in steals per game (2.4) and the Pipers lead Division III competition across the nation with an average of 10 steals a game.
In a losing effort, DeRock only scored 10 points against Carleton last week. The Pipers lost 98-61 at Carleton. First-year Piper Chad Rich (Edina) probably had the best game of any Hamline player. The reserve scored 15 points, compiled 6 rebounds, while going 5-7 from the field (3-3 from three-point range), and 2-2 from the line.
Carleton dominated Hamline in every facet of the box score and with the loss, the Pipers are in danger of finishing in last place in the MIAC. The Pipers are 5-12 in the conference and only Concordia has played worse, evident by the Cobber’s 3-14 record. With playoffs being a long shot, the Pipers have their pride at stake. With games against St. John’s and Macalester left to be played, Hamline could finish as high as sixth or as low as the cellar in the conference.
The Pipers play St. John’s at Collegeville on Feb. 14. The game begins at 7:30.
