Piper football getting good with new coach

Staff Writer

Hamline football has a new face. On January 2nd Jim Good took over as Hamline’s head coach after Coach Miller’s two year stretch ended on November 21st.

This is Good’s first head coaching job. Good previously was offensive coordinator for Texas Lutheran University, located in Seguin Texas, from 2004-06 in addition to serving as associate head coach from 2005-06. Good was the team’s offensive line coach from 2002-03 and the quarterback coach and passing game coordinator in 2001.

“He [Good] has a strong track record of success and high energy,” said Hamline Athletics Director Dan O’Brien.

Good has a knack for being able to turn teams around. Before his arrival at Texas Lutheran, the team was 2-8. By his second year, his offense led the team to a respectable 7-3 record. Prior to his stint at Texas Lutheran, Good was offensive coordinator at Illinois College where he took on an offense that had lost 18 straight games. In his second year there, his offense was 6-4.

“I am committed to success...We need a belief that we can win. It’s a culture that needs to get changed,” said Good.
Good’s relationship with football goes back a long way. After growing up in a small town outside Seattle, Washington, he attended and played football at Linfield College in Oregon. After he graduated, he was Linfield’s running back coach for five years while he earned a Masters degree in Exercise and Sports Science at Oregon State.

“He has done some wonderful things in just a month,” said O’Brien. “He has had to learn about Hamline and the Cities, sell a house, buy a house, all the while he’s been living in 3rd floor Drew.”

There were about 95 applicants in the pool and five interviews for the head coaching job, according to O’Brien. “We wanted a person who had a Division III background, a record of success, a good recruiter, and a person with good communication skills,” said O’Brien.

There are other changes being made to the football staff as well. Chad Rogosheske will remain assistant coach, but Good will bring in many of his own people to fill out the staff in the coming weeks.

“We need good athletes with great attitudes,” said Good. “We need to get every person that wants to play football here.”
