A brief note from the Opinion Editor

Opinion Editor

Why don’t people write letters to the editor? This is a perfect opportunity for the Hamline community to voice their opinions on whatever subject they desire and exercise their “sacred” right of free speech, and yet, we at the Oracle are lucky to get maybe one letter per week. This is Hamline apathy at its finest.

Every day I hear at least 10 people complain about something - the prices in the bookstore, the food at Hamline’s meal sites, the weather, professors, classes, other students, Hamline sports, and even the Oracle itself. But when it comes down to it, people apparently want to keep their opinions to themselves or a close circle of personal friends. Why is that?

I also know that some people would like to share their opinions, but would rather do so anonymously or under a false name. Stand up for what you believe in. Chances are, someone else is thinking the same thing.

People at Hamline are so quick to complain, but don’t want to make an effort to voice that opinion to the Hamline community.

This is not only a problem for the Opinion section, but for other sections as well. When someone is asked to comment for a news story, or potentially be a source for a story, why would that person not want to comment or participate? It used to be that people loved to see their name in print, but now it seems like people are running away from reporters and would rather just read the news instead of participating actively. You are the news, people. Deal with it.

Do people have a problem with the Oracle; are we inaccessible? Is that why we don’t get participation? What are we doing wrong, folks? What do we have to do to get you to participate?

Before I worked for the Oracle, I used to love reading the letters to the editor because it was interesting to read opinions of the Hamline community and not just one or two columnists’ opinions (which are usually about the same topics) week after week. The battles that went on between students through the newspaper were some of my favorite things to read.

So where did these bold, opinionated people go? Did they all graduate? Is the rest of Hamline’s community too scared to share their feelings? Come on, peoplečlets be brave here.

I don’t mean to preach, but the Oracle is meant for the students. We want students to participate in any and all aspects of it’s creation, and it would be great to see a few more letters to the editor come through the ranks. You all have opinions, and we want to hear them. Props to those of you who have written letters so far this yearčlet’s keep them coming.

Final thought for the dayčstop complaining and write about it. I’m tired of hearing of how miserable everyone is, and know that their complaining will never amount to anything but make that person seem like a cynical whiner. I would rather read about it.
