Fire tracks

We can do it. We have the technology. The technology to highlight some of the most bangin' jams from major labels and local artists alike. Here are the Fire Tracks. Enjoy.

"My Sword Hands Anger" - Apostle of Hustle

I first heard this Canadian band when I picked up their CD out of sheer curiosity. With a band name like “Apostle of Hustle,” how could I go wrong? It turns out I went a little wrong. Their last CD wasn’t bad. It was interesting enough to listen to, but not poppy enough to be memorable. This new song, off their new album National Anthem of Nowhere which just dropped last Tuesday, is playful and catchy. For fans of bizarre folk-electronica.

"Rocket Hips" - Baby Guts

This grunge-punk three-piece has been playing in grimy basements and bars alike for the past several years. Put simply, they are a cuter, more interesting Sonic Youth. They’re much more rhythmic than the typical punk band, but passion and frustration in the vocals (which, it could be argued, is of utmost importance in a punk band) is not lost. Check out the Guts on February 14 at Big V’s and February 17 at the Triple Rock.

"Australia" - The Shins

Maybe it’s the album cover art, but the Shins seem like they’d be perfect to score a Dr. Suess story. Hailing from Oregon, the Shins recall a pop strangeness that bears a likeness to The Beatles in their LSD heyday. The Shins aren’t reinventing the wheel, but they are making some well-animated pop music.

"Funny Money" - Talib Kweli

This song is only one of the great jams featured on Liberation, a release that super-lyricist Kweli and producer Madlib put up for free (including artwork) on the internet for the first week of ‘07. Its nearly impossible to argue with Kweli’s lyrical prowess, and Madlib’s production is on-point to say the least. Google “Talib Kweli Liberation” and you’ll probably be able to find this album somewhere out there in cyberspace.
