Women's hockey win five of six, Piper record books rewritten daily
While January was a time of rest and relaxation for most Hamline students, the month was when the women’s hockey team went to work on the MIAC standings. The Pipers won five of six contests in J-term, propelling them to fourth place in the MIAC. Their only loss coming at home, on January 26. The Pipers fell at hands of St. Mary’s (1-2) only to pound them 6-1 the very next night on the Cardinals’ home ice. The loss to St. Mary’s concluded a streak of seven victories. The 2006-2007 Pipers set a new school record for consecutive wins.
Hamline’s ascension through the standings and competitive play can be attributed to stellar play from both the offense and the defense. The Pipers boast the fourth ranked scoring offense, the third-ranked scoring defense, and a goaltender that saves nearly 90 percent of everything shot at her. Sophomore Crystal Testolin has 169 saves on the season and on the scoring side, the Piper record books are being updated at a rapid pace.
Up until this season, 32 points was enough to rank a player second in all-time scoring at Hamline. Hamline Alum Emily Gross was previously the school’s second highest scorer. Four current players from this year’s squad have since passed the 32-point mark. With 31 points, Emily’s sister Marie looks to be the next player to leap frog the Piper Alum. Junior defender Marie Gross has been reliable through ten games, accumulating eight points while averaging 0.7 assists per game. Gross is fifth in the conference in defenseman scoring.
This young Piper team has been led by the impressive play of one of its few veterans. Junior forward Sara Mickelson has been tearing up the competition during January. Mickelson needs only one goal to claim Hamline’s all-time single season record. She currently has 16 goals. The record was set by Hamline Alum Angie Erickson. Erickson scored 17 goals in 2000-2001, the first year of women’s hockey at Hamline. Mickelson is the conference’s fourth ranked goal scorer, sixth in power-play points (6), second in power-play goals (4), tied for first with three game-winning goals while leading Hamline to fourth place in the standings.
Hamline has been getting consistent scoring from its youth as well. First-year forwards Melanie Leveille and Sophie Davidson are tied for second in MIAC freshman scoring. Through 10 games, Leveille has seven goals and five assists while Davidson has three goals and nine assists. Both are averaging 1.2 points per game.
If the playoffs started today, Hamline would be in. With two upcoming games against St. Olaf, the Pipers are poised to make a run to further climb the standings. The Pipers are 5-4-1 in the MIAC and 9-5-2 overall. The team’s nine wins this season are one less than the Pipers have accumulated in the previous three seasons combined. Hamline will play Bethel at home on February 9. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
