Pipers narrowly defeat Augsburg
January was a tough month for the Piper men’s basketball team, but they ended the month on a positive note last Wednesday, defeating Augsburg 85-84 at Hutton Arena. The Pipers are seated 11th in the MIAC, one place and one victory more than lowly Concordia. The loss ties Augsburg with Macalester for tenth place.
Sophomore Jon DeRock added to what is turning out to be a really solid career as a Piper. Against Augsburg, DeRock scored 34 points. With little more than a minute remaining in regulation play, the sophomore nailed a three-point play, giving Hamline the lead they would not relinquish. For the game, DeRock made 12 of 16 field goals, making six of seven three-pointers. After DeRock’s three-point play, the Pipers’ were aided by the Auggies missing a pair of free throws, thus failing to take the lead.
It was a close, competitive game from beginning to end. At half-time, the Auggies led 52-46. The Auggies led by ten points in the second half but Hamline rallied on a scoring run in which the Pipers outscored the Auggies 14-3. The Pipers outscored Augsburg by seven points in the second half though.
Sophomore Tony Thrasher added 18 points for the Pipers, continuing his stellar season. Like DeRock, Thrasher is coming on strong for the Pipers. This season both sophomores have surpassed 650 points on their careers. DeRock is averaging 15.8 points per game. Thrasher leads all Pipers in scoring with 16.7 points a game and ranks ninth in the MIAC in scoring. Thrasher is also chiming in with 5.1 rebounds a game. In a season where Thrasher has enjoyed career highs in several statistical categories, he has scored over 30 points twice this year. Sam Weiner contributed seven assists in the game against Augsburg, while directing the Piper offense. This season the senior surpassed the 300 assists mark, a mark that few players reach.
The Pipers are 4-11 in the MIAC, 6-14 overall, and are ranked 11th in the conference. It’s safe to say the season has been a disappointment for this young Piper team that sports only two seniors. The preseason coach’s poll predicted Hamline to finish in fifth place. The Pipers failed to repeat or build on the success they experienced last year, when they made it to the MIAC semifinals before losing to St. Thomas. With the season winding down. the playoffs are out of the question for this year’s men’s team. The Pipers have little more than trying not to finish in last place to play for, despite boasting the fourth ranked scoring offense in the MIAC. Outside of scoring, the men rank last or near last in most other categories.
On Saturday, February 5, the Pipers take on Gustavus at home. The game begins at 1:00 p.m.
