Women's basketball keeps playoff hopes alive with impressive play
With the basketball season winding down, playoff pictures are beginning to take shape. The fifth place Piper women’s basketball team is keeping playoff hopes alive by beating Augsburg 75-71, last week.
Mirroring the men’s performance against Augsburg, the Auggies kept it close all game. Augsburg outscored Hamline 30-29 in the first half but the Pipers narrowly outscored Augsburg 46-41 in the second. Sophomore Jessica Heinen led all Pipers with 20 points in the contest, while chipping in 9 boards. The sophomore was the difference maker in the second half, scoring 13 of her 20 points in the first six minutes of the second half. Senior Ashlee Senser, one of only two seniors on the young Piper team, was a monster on the boards, creating problems for the Auggies. Senser grabbed 14 rebounds on the night. Sophomore Krystal Tschumperlin added 15 points on the night. Junior Shelby Hyllengren totaled nine rebounds against the Auggies. Hyllengren ranks second in the conference in rebounds; she averages 8.3 boards on a nightly basis. Despite only shooting 31 percent in field goals, the Pipers had an all around solid game with good play from multiple outlets.
The young Pipers are trying to make the playoffs for the second time in as many years. Currently, their record stands at 9-7 in MIAC games and 11-8 overall. A fifth place finish isn’t enough to get them there, but they are playing better than expected. The preseason coach’s poll prognosticated a seventh place finish. Hamline has the fifth-best scoring offense in the conference and the third-best rebounding team but will have to improve in other categories in order to make their playoff hopes a reality. As a team, the Pipers do not shoot well. Their 39 percent field goal percentage contributes to a high turnover margin. They turn over the ball nearly 23 times a game. The Pipers have the ability to make a playoff run and potentially do some damage in the process. With a little tightening up on offense, this team should continue to exceed preseason expectations.
Hamline will travel to St. Catherine on Wednesday, February 7. Tip off is at 7:30.
