This is not Hamline High

Come on, kids. Seriously.

Before you read this editorial, take a look at Matt Hill’s column. In it he talks about the big screen TV that was destroyed by some of Hamline’s less mature Pipers. Upon hearing the news some of the older staffers at the Oracle rolled their eyes, and sighed, “Here we go again.”

For the most part Hamline’s first-year class has avoided the wanton destruction that past first-year classes have inflicted on campus. Many of us remember waking up from the weekend haze to bathrooms that looked like they had been ravaged by Motley Crew or some other second-rate hair band making the touring rounds in St. Paul. Missing stall doors, vomit, other less mentionable bodily fluids and broken glass were once, sadly common features on Sunday mornings. But this year seemed different; quieter, no less fun, but at least less destructive.

But over J-term things changed. Seriously, folks, what is the point of destroying something that is meant to be enjoyed by all?

Sure, it’s possible that it was an accident, but, as Hill points out it happened at night, and no one seems to know how the brand-new big screen TV was destroyed. Now don’t get us wrong, the Oracle likes to party as much as any group of college students, but pointless destruction is, well, pointless. Remember that just about everything on this campus is paid for by each one of us. It was our TV. We all know it’s fun to have a few drinks and let off some steam, but there have to be less destructive ways to let loose.

In the end, we all live, work and for the most part play here, so why not take care of the place? Have your parties, have your drinks, but let’s stay safe, and away from the childish high school destruction. Remember the old adage-"don’t shit in your own nest.” Who knows, next time it could be your TV, your computer or your bathroom.
