Letter to the Editor

Bonus could have been spent better

It doesn’t surprise me to see how lavishly Hamline’s Board of Trustees threw money at former President Osnes during his last year at Hamline. The Dec. 12, 2006 Oracle reported that on top of his generous $300,000-plus salary, Osnes received a retirement bonus of $500,000, making his total earnings $824,179. The Board of Trustees always swooned whenever Osnes winked and nudged elbows with them, why wouldn’t they “fairly” compensate him for his years of service?

If they really want to give to those who embody the “spirit of Hamline,” give that bonus to the students, faculty and staff. Let’s for a second pretend that Osnes did earn every single penny of his regular salary-$324,179, which leaves his bonus of $500,000 to spend on the students. What can $500,000 buy? Well, you could spend it on buying roughly 1,800 animal skeletons for the anthropology lab. I’m sure $500,000 would go a long way toward making all of the buildings on campus handicapped accessible, and you could probably build a nicer ramp at the Hamline United Methodist Church and avoid the embarrassment of last year’s Honors Day.

Stop cutting from departmental budgets and finance them instead. Hire more professors. Pay the ones we already have what they deservečwhich, from my experience, is more than Hamline could ever pay in a lifetime. I wonder if any of the professors who have worked at Hamline for 17-plus years will receive a half-million dollars when they retire. They, I’m sure, have earned it ten times over.

Spread that money out evenly over the student workers and raise the minimum wage on campus. I worked on campus during the school year and summer and Osnes still made 100 times what I did.

$500,000 funds 14 End of Year Parties, or could cover the entire HEAT budget six times over. Hell, $500,000 would buy 7,142 kegs for the EOYP, which I’m sure more than a few Hamline students would benefit from (now there’s a gentle nudge for HEAT to bring back drinking at the EOYP).

While I’m all for buying 7,000 kegs, here’s a novel idea-spend the money on scholarships! You could fund 21 students for full tuition scholarships with $500,000, not to mention how many students would receive some form of financial gain if it were split into partial scholarships.

The reason $824,179 insults me as a student and member of the Hamline community is during that very school year, ’04-’05, my financial aid package for the upcoming school year was incredibly lacking. When I say lacking, I mean it refused to take into account my parent’s financial hardships for the year, in which they seriously considered closing their small business.

I filled out Special Circumstances financial aid forms, wrote angry letters, and made repeated phone calls, of which seemed to go largely ignored, except by a few like Cheryl Dooley. It was only after what had to be considered harassment did I receive a fair financial aid package. So to see that Osnes was given money to wipe his ass with was the most insulting by far. Will I receive such a package when I graduate and leave Hamline in May? Of course not. I’ll be loaded with debt.

Please, don’t repeat this mistake again. If the Board of Trustees wanted to find who was truly deserving of $500,000, they shouldn’t start their search in Old Main. There are students, professors and programs far more worthy than an outgoing figurehead.
