Will it work? New ACTC bus schedule implemented for spring semester
For the third time in three semesters, the ACTC bus system has a new schedule.
Only this time, the changes might have been spurred by complaints coming from students at Hamline and the College of St. Catherine.
Paul McDougall, executive director of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities, says that he heard the most belligerence from Hamline students about the previous route, which took over an hour to complete.
“(The complaints) caused everybody involved to step back and re-evaluate,” McDougall said.
The new schedule, which is split into two bus routes, will provide more frequent stops at each ACTC campus. One route is specifically for the St. Paul colleges in the consortium, and it circles back to Hamline once every 40 minutes. The other route connects the St. Paul campus of St. Catherine to the Minneapolis campus of St. Catherine, the University of St. Thomas and Augsburg College. With the new schedule, a trip between the campuses of St. Kate’s takes approximately 15 minutes. Last semester, because the buses made stops at each school, the same trip took more than an hour.
This caused plenty of outrage at St. Catherine. Sophomore Frankie Burnhill, who wrote an editorial about the faulty bus schedule in her campus newspaper, says she likes to think that all of the student commotion had something to do with the change. A petition against the bus schedule went around the St. Catherine campus last fall and was signed by over 50 students.
At the same time, she understands that not everybody can be pleased about the new schedule.
“If one school wins in one situation, then the others will be upset,” Burnhill said.
A bus driver who only wished to be referred to as Don echoed Burnhill’s sentiment.
“Professors and students complained about the timing,” he said. “No matter what you do, there are going to be complainers. I get them coming on at Macalester, and we used to go to St. Thomas, and then here. Now they bitch because I leave Macalester and come here.”
Because there is no direct route from Hamline or Macalester to Augsburg, a transfer has to be made at St. Catherine. Although the two routes meet up at St. Catherine every 40 minutes, some students of those schools have been left to worry about the layover. Augsburg junior Emily Dustenson is taking the Language Phenomenon at Hamline, but has a class at Augsburg shortly after.
“My problem is that I have to get from Hamline to Augsburg and back, so if I miss this bus, and my class gets out at 2:50, I’m late for choir by a half hour,” she said.
Dustenson does have a backup plan for getting to Augsburg, but she says a transfer on a day with snowy or icy weather might lead to a delay.
Ellen Schousboe, a sophomore in anthropology, says she has to let the drivers know in advance that she is making the transfer.
“According to the schedule, this year, both buses arrive and leave St. Kate’s at 7:40,” Schousboe said. “You have to request specially for the bus drivers to wait for you. If they forget or one of the bus drivers doesn’t radio the other...I’m kind of worried about what will happen, because the transfer window is like one minute.”
However, bus driver Don says he makes a mindful effort to stay at each stop for nearly five minutes.
“Sometimes these professors get into themselves and they hold the kids three or four minutes over,” he said. “I can’t help that. They shouldn’t be bitching about that to the bus company. I do wait sometimes for kids if they ask me, but if I did that at all my stops, I’d be an hour behind time when the day ended.”
McDougall agrees.
“Unfortunately in this weather, things do come up, but we want to keep the buses moving the best we can,” he said. “We don’t want to inconvenience everybody else who is already on the bus. I don’t think we’ll miss that layover too often.”
At this point, the problems seem to be isolated to individuals. McDougall says he does what he can to keep everybody pleased. Sometimes this means taking school scheduling into consideration.
“Scheduling did come into play, especially with Augsburg,” he said. “They started classes on Jan. 16, a bit earlier than most, so it was quite difficult to cross-register for classes there, which means there isn’t that much traffic going there.”
He says that played a small role in determining that there would be no direct route between Hamline and Augsburg, but expressed that the instituted schedule adds better timing than the other options.
“Other than hiring a fleet of cabs, I don’t know how we would make everyone happy. We only have two buses, so we can’t hit all the class changes at each school.”
