Free discount cards provide deals for CLA students
Most college students have one struggle in common: earning and saving money. Fortunately, the Student Alumni Board’s (SAB) Outreach team is in the process of creating something that can help knock dollars off of students’ expenses around town-the Piperpass.
Sponsored by the CLA Alumni Office, the Piperpass is designed to give CLA students discounts at restaurants, stores and services in the Hamline area. It will be the size of a standard credit card and as long as supplies last each CLA student will get one free card. After that, graduate and law students may be given the extras, said SAB president Ann Engebretson.
Phil Brondyke, the Outreach team chair who coordinated most of the project, said that 11 businesses have contributed to the pass so far. He says that they are “mainly smaller places” rather than chains. Students can expect the cards to be distributed the week of Feb. 12.
“We’re hoping to continue this,” SAB member Lisa Klinger said. “Hopefully more businesses will want to become involved.” She described the current Piperpass as a “pilot,” with high hopes to incorporate more local venues in the future.
Currently, the card will be good for deals such as a free fountain drink to go with your meal at Chipotle, 20 percent off items at Hamline Hardware Hank and $0.99 Crazy Bread at Little Caesar’s. You will need your Hamline ID when presenting your card at each business.
All money for the cards themselves came from the SAB budget, and each offer made from a business was voluntary. Brondyke first came up with the idea during the summer, and since then the board has been busy contacting businesses, making printing plans and designing the card itself.
So, why a discount card?
“The Hamline-Midway community is very unique and sometimes we forget to get out and explore it,” Engebretson said. Special deals around town might get students to venture out and visit the places they don’t go to now, either because they don’t have the money or haven’t heard about them, she said.
“Being able to find good deals really helps,” Klinger said, adding that she’s most excited about the prospect of savings at Chipotle and Little Caeser’s.
Brondyke simply said the program was “just a way to give something back to the students.”
A full list of the deals associated with the Piperpass system will be included on the back of each card.
