Hannah Kuether/Oracle: How did you end up at Hamline?
Emily Moreland: Actually, my mom told me about it. I had applied to St. Kate’s and was going to go there, but my mom was like, “You should have a second option,” so I came here and it was cool. I liked it.
O: What are you majoring in?
EM: English with a creative writing concentration and social studies.
O: What do you do around campus?
EM: I play basketball, lacrosse, I am a CA on second floor far-east [Drew]. I also work at Disability Services.
O: What do you do there?
EM: I just staff, make sure that students who use our office are accommodated to the best of our abilities.
O: How did you get involved in that?
EM: I have a reading disability myself, so I found out through Deb Holtz, who’s the director, that they needed people to work there. I talked to her and interviewed and I’ve been working there since winter of sophomore year.
O: Do you like being a CA?
EM: Yeah. It’s been interesting this year because we’ve had two CAs resign already. One’s been replaced and the other one hasn’t, so what's going on now is I’m the CA of two halls. I used to be just far-east, but this semester I’m going to be far-east and mid-east second floor. It’s a fun job.
O: What are you planning on doing this summer? Are you going to stay here and be a CA?
EM: This summer? No, I’m getting away from here! [laughs] I’ll go back home and umpire boys baseball in my town. I’m also planning on playing a lot of tennis for Lifetime Fitness. I’m hoping to get a job with them so membership isn’t so expensive. And I’ll play basketball. And softball. And lacrosse.
O: Have you played sports your whole life?
EM: Actually, college-wise, I started basketball and lacrosse this year. I tore my ACL in my right knee my freshman year, in my left knee my sophomore year, so I started up these sports my junior year. My sophomore year I played tennis for Hamline.
O: Do you have a favorite sport?
EM: It depends on the season, actually. Right now it would have to be basketball because I’m in it, but I’m really looking forward to lacrosse. This summer I’m looking forward to softball. So, no. Not really.
O: Lacrosse is pretty new here at Hamline, right?
EM: Yeah, it’s a couple years old. We’ve had a coach and this year we’ve got a lot of good girls out for the team and we’re starting to get the name out. We’re hoping that [Dan O’Brien] will bring it to the collegiate level.
O: Where do you play? In the gym? On the football field?
EM: We have our practices on the Hamline football field when we can get out there, for now we just practice in the gym. This weekend we’re planning on going to a big indoor tournament in Nebraska.
O: Are you worried about re-injuring your knees?
EM: I’m actually goalie, so I just get big, giant lacrosse balls whipped at me at tremendous speeds, but I don’t know. I’m not too afraid of it anymore. I used to be, because I remembered what surgery was like. I don’t remember what surgery’s like anymore [laughs].
O: Anything else we should know about you?
EM: I don’t know... I have an adopted brother, Matthew; we’re both adopted from South Korea.
