The wonderful world of Vista
Microsoft introduced their newest version of the Windows operating system on the market last Tuesday. Microsoft claims that this new version of the time-tested Windows software, titled Vista, is easier and more intuitive to use than previous editions.
Stated on Microsoft.com, the benefits of Windows Vista are a much easier system that is more entertaining, better connected, and safer.
Vista also claims to be better than previous versions in terms of communication, gaming, memories, music, productivity, TV, and movies.
According to Microsoft’s website, “Windows Vista makes it faster and easier than ever to find, use, manage, share, and enjoy information on PCs and on the web.”
It’s been five years since Microsoft released Windows XP, a sizable gap considering that Apple, the company's main operating system competitor, released their newest version in April of 2005.
With four Windows Vista versions on the market, customers might have a confusing time purchasing the most appropriate one for their purposes. The editions include: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate.
The simplest form, Home Basic, is the base version, with the bare minimum of total features. One step up is Home Premium, which has almost as many features as Ultimate. Home Premium is ideal for home use while Business is preferred for the corporate workforce.
Home Premium is similar to Ultimate, but does not include Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption, which protects data against loss and comes without a Networking Center and a Remote Desktop. The home Premium version also comes without Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore, which protects against hardware failure. Microsoft has an effective graphic online to show the differences among the four Vista editions.
The four versions of Vista will not be cheap. With average prices for Home Basic being $100, Home Premium $150, Business $200, and Ultimate $250, consumers will have to spend a high amount to get the newest system on the market today.
Microsoft has also developed another Vista version, Windows Vista Starter. Microsoft’s website says, “this [Windows Vista Starter] is the most affordable way to enjoy the basic Windows Vista experience. Windows Vista Starter is exclusively available in emerging markets.”
The starter version is created for beginning PC users, and has special tutorials to make it easier to use than the other four versions. Unfortunately, the Windows Vista Starter is not available in the United States, or other high income markets.
The new software does not come without its own criticisms however. Most current hardware will not fully run Vista. “While many computers in use today will be able to update and run the new operating system, they’ll be able to run it only in what Microsoft slyly calls Windows Vista Basic,” says Robert Vamosi of ZDnet US. ZDnet is a busisness technology website based in Australia. Coincidentally, Windows Vista debuted to the public in Australia one day before its release in the United States.
“Unless you buy a new PC sometime in 2007, or add a high-end video card and some extra memory to your current PC, you probably won’t get the visual Vista experience,” Vamosi said.
Windows Vista’s graphics hardware also have caused problems in trial runs. “If you’re used to your laptop lasting on a long, cross-country flight, you might want to reconsider upgrading to Windows Vistčthat is, if you want the new Aero graphics features turned on,” Vamosi said.
Through testing, laptops running with Vista’s Aero graphics had a significantly reduced battery life when compared to laptops using standard graphics of Windows Vista Basic.
Time will tell whether Vista, with its new features will quiet the critics.
