It's not just about getting radical: Point Break (1991)
During the 1990s, American moviegoers were kept on the edge of their seats by a resurgence of big-budget action thrillers. This time period saw the public rushing to the box office, forking over their hard-earned cash to see images of merciless robot armies, exploding buses, and Jean Claude Van Damme on the silver screen. However, in this sea of exploding oil trucks, catchy one-liners, and awkward love sequences, one film rises above, encompassing the culture of the time as well as embracing a spiritual message. Combining the rough-and-tumble worlds of extreme sports and petty crime with the life of an up-and-coming FBI agent, Point Break attempts to teach us that there may be more to life than just getting radical.
The film centers on Special Agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), a recent transfer to the FBI’s West Coast bank robbery division. With the help of veteran agent Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey, in what many consider to be his finest moment), Utah goes undercover to bust the Ex-Presidents, LA’s most notorious bank robbers. Under the advice of Pappas, Utah infiltrates the seemingly dangerous world of recreational surfing, where he is befriended by Bohdi (Patrick Swayze), a “modern savage” who insists there is more to riding waves than a quick adrenaline fix. However, as he gains the surfer’s trust, Utah finds that there is more to his new friend than he originally thought, and is forced to make a choice between his loyalty to the FBI and his newfound freedom.
Similar to films such as John Carpenter’s They Live, Point Break combines impossible action sequences (Utah jumping out of a plane, sans parachute, in order to hold Swayze at gunpoint mid-free fall) and amazing dialogue (“I’m so hungry I could eat the ass-end out of a dead rhino”) with a subtle commentary on the state of the world. Throughout the film, we see a battle between Western Materialism and Eastern Spirituality, culminating with a climactic showdown at Australia’s infamous Bells Beach. Point Break is a perfect example of what an action film should be; a perfect balance between genius and absolute madness. Pick it up at your nearest video bargain bin.
