Turning heads, but not wanting popularity

Kids who hail from the alternately bright and smoggy landscape of Los Angeles, The Silversun Pickups, give a musical AED to the grungy, laid back style of rock that was thought to be as dead as Billy Corgan is bald.

Not so, it seems. With the release of Carnavas, the four members of the Silversun Pickups have critics making Stone Roses and Smashing Pumpkins references with one album.

Despite receiving rave reviews by the likes of Carson Daly and Rolling Stone, the band has largely remained out of the mainstream media spotlight, which may well be lead singer Brian Aubert’s original intent. The Silversun Pickups carry over influences like Smashing Pumpkins, but the listener also hears hints of Built to Spill, Wilco, and even the finely distorted guitar sounds and screams of the Pixies.

Silversun Pickups’ first single, “Lazy Eye,” channels this collective of influences to create a sound that is both laid back and intense. Aubert’s light and dainty vocals followed by wailing and shouts offset bassist Nikki Monninger’s Kim-Deal-like vocal backup. In fact, when Aubert’s wailing is at its highest, the listener notices bassist Monninger’s voice the most because of its subtle comfort beneath a deafening roar, like getting a hug in the midst of a panic attack.

The stripped-down-sounding album illustrates a revolt against big-budget, orchestral sounds that many indie bands have traded in their roots for. Nowhere on Carnavas is there a sound that cannot be reproduced by the four band members while playing live. This “what you hear is what you get” attitude is a relief from the complex sound arrangements that litter the modern musical landscape.

Despite the nostalgic sickness that music writers are obviously suffering from, the Silversun Pickups have consistently tried to distance themselves from their forebears in the hopes that their fate will not be as cataclysmic. In interview after interview, Aubert has consistently reiterated that while the bands influences may come from many 1990s bands, they are not trying to throw back the clock to 1997. As soon as critics wake up and realize this fact, they will realize that the Pickups are not a throwback, but a natural progression in music. Their sound does not try to recreate a certain time or place. Instead, Silversun Pickups seeks to create a new sound for a new century.

Carnavas is not one of those albums that a person hears once and throws on the sofa. With each listen the album sounds tighter and its brilliance shines brighter. By the second time through, it will become the soundtrack to your year.
