Young Piper squad continues ascension of MIAC standings

Sports Editor

The Piper women’s basketball team thrashed St. Mary’s at Hutton Arena last week, winning 90-50. With only one game separating the Pipers and first place St. Benedict’s in the MIAC standings, Hamline would not let their foot off the throat of the Cardinals.

Sophomore guard Krystal Tschumperlin continued her strong season for the Pipers, as she led all scorers with 19 points. Tschumperlin was six for nine from the floor and sunk both of her three-pointers in 27 minutes of play.

Sophomore Jessica Heinen contributed significantly as well. Heinen out-rebounded everyone on the court with nine overall and she scored 14 points on the game for the Pipers.

It was a high scoring game for the Pipers, but it was their defensive shutdown of St. Mary’s that is most telling of their dominance. Hamline had three blocks, 14 steals, 47 rebounds, and held the Cardinals to a dreadful 32 percent field-goal percentage.

The Pipers may be shallow in experience but they are deep in talent. This young team fields only two seniors, but the team is gaining experience quickly and staying competitive. Hamline is now 3-1 in the MIAC and is looking to stay in the playoff hunt throughout the season’s duration.
