Hamline swimming and diving laps competition at the St. Mary's Invitational
It was war for the Hamline kings and queens of chlorine at the St. Mary’s Invitational on Dec. 2. The men’s team collected 572 points altogether and ended up placing second of five men’s teams. St. Thomas’s men won the competition with 756 points. Host St. Mary’s came in third.
The women’s team gained 490 points to grab third place out of six schools. Macalester won the women’s division with 697 points. St. Thomas was close behind with 621.5 points.
Sophomore swimmer Jonathan Tapia-Rodriguez broke two pool records at the Invite despite the minor concussion Tapia-Rodriguez suffered during practice.
“We had Jonathan checked out and cleared before the meet, and several times during the day of the meet. I want to make it clear that Jonathan’s health was our primary concern and he was fully cleared by medical professionals," said swimming and diving coach Paul Wass Jr.
Coach Wass Jr. said that the St. Mary’s Invite was a great opportunity for the swimmers to hone their skills and sharpen their edge. “If I have a swimmer who can do well in an event, and gain experience, then that matters a lot,” Wass said.
The experience seems to be helping, as junior Dana Ketchar and first-year Renee Punyko both swept three events.
The Pipers aim to make a “code red” when they face off against those teams at the Walker Fieldhouse on Dec. 16.
“What we mean when we say 'code red' is that we want to fill the bleachers with maroon and silver. To show our home advantage,” Taylor said.
The Pipers rest up this week before facing the University of Wisconsin River-Falls in the Walker Fieldhouse pool Dec. 16 at 1 p.m.
