Pipers dominate St. Mary's throughout, yet lose by a single basket
On Dec. 6, the Piper men’s basketball team played St. Mary’s University at Hutton Arena. Despite leading by double-digit figures for most of the game, the Pipers let the game slip away, losing 87-89.
At the peak of Hamline’s first-half dominance, they led St. Mary’s by 20 points. Before halftime, the Cardinals trailed by less than ten points.
The Pipers played well, shooting 55.7 percent from the field and registering four players who scored in double-digits. Sophomore Tony Thrasher led all Pipers in scoring with his 26-point performance.
As the scoreboard would reflect, these teams were equally matched. One basket decided the game. The Pipers only recorded five more rebounds than their opponents. The difference-maker for the Pipers and St. Mary’s was the three-point arch. The Pipers were eight for 17 from behind the line and St. Mary’s was nine for 17. Hamline didn’t hit any threes in the second half, while the Cardinals hit seven of 12.
The victory would have been Hamline’s first MIAC win of the year. The Pipers are currently seated in the cellar of the MIAC.
