Found in the Crowd
with Drew Bennet, Junior
Hannah Kuether/Oracle: What is your full name?
DB: Andrew Knox Bennett.
HK: Where is Knox from?
DB: It’s my grandma’s maiden name. She’s Scottish.
HK: Are you mostly Scottish?
DB: I think so; I’m not really sure.
HK: Wasn’t that a question you asked your parents when you were little?
DB: Not really. We always went to the Scottish festival at Macalester because I’m part of the MacFarlane clan or something.
HK: What do you do around campus?
DB: I play baseball, I’m always in the science labs doing physics and stuff. It’s my major.
HK: What do you want to do with a physics major?
DB: I don’t know, maybe teach physics in high school or college. And coach baseball.
HK: Is baseball your one true love?
DB: [laughs] Yeah.
HK: You haven’t gone to Hamline for your entire college career, have you?
DB: No, I transferred after one semester at Grinnell. I really didn’t like it. It seemed like a good fit when I was looking, but I got there and didn’t fit in well with the team and it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere.
HK: Do you do anything other than baseball?
DB: Well, I’m on SAACčthe Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
HK: What does that do?
DB: Each sport has a couple of reps who represent student athletes on campus. We plan different events like Toys for Teens and try to make athletes more recognizable around campus.
HK: What other events do you do, anything this year?
DB: We started a “brother-sister” sport thing this year. Like, baseball’s sister sport is volleyball, so we tried to go to all of their games and do the whole superfan thingčthe body painting and stuffčreally support them.
HK: Fun!
DB: We also did “Code Red” games this year. Teams will pick their most important games, maybe against big rivals, and we try to get as many people as we can to come. Also, the MIAC is really emphasizing sportsmanship this year so we’re having each team pick someone for a sportsmanship award.
HK: Did you play baseball all through high school?
DB: Yeah, I started when I was about 5.
HK: Did your parents start you?
DB: My grandpa sent me my first baseball glove.
HK: Very cool. Where do you live right now?
DB: I live on the first floor of Manor; it’s my third year living in Manor. I’m pretty happy.
HK: Have you lived in the same room?
DB: No, I’m one floor down from last year.
HK: Why do you like Manor?
DB: I don’t know, it’s generally pretty quiet. It’s a nice old building. Nice people, nice neighbors.
HK: Have you ever seen any ghosts?
DB: No. I’ve heard rumors, but I’ve never seen any.
HK: How about cockroaches?
DB: No, not one actually. I’m not a big bug person...
