FMLA rocks the mic yet again
Hamline students were treated to a variety of entertaining acts at the annual Womyn’s Cabaret hosted by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance on Nov. 29 in the HUB. The event is designed to celebrate women in the arts. Attendance was strong for the nearly dozen acts that performed starting at 7 p.m.
Acts ranged from spoken word poetry by Christy Eriksen to Professor Bruce Bolon performing Elton John and Pink Floyd on the piano.
A particularly crowd-pleasing performance was given by a young woman performing a portion of the Vagina Monologues. The selected piece was about a thirtysomething tax attorney who quits her job in the legal field to pursue her true passion: the moaning female. Laughter was in the air as the crowd was treated to renditions of the orgasmic moan ranging from the WASP moan to the uninhibited bisexual moan.
Tony “King” Wilson crooned several selections, including a piece he performed in dedication to his mother. Tony wasn’t the only male to dazzle the crowd, as Matt Kitchin sang several songs while playing guitar. Kitchin was certain to mention political struggles in Tibet and South America and encouraged the audience to take action.
Marion Gomez gave her first poetry reading for the crowd, including a poem by Sandra Cisneros.
Toward the end of the night, I was taken aback when a young woman sitting next to me turned in my direction and loudly exclaimed, “What’s your name?” Fearing retribution for a false answer, I told her my name. Shortly after, she placed a feminine hygiene product (in its packaging) in my hand. “What should you do with this next?” Flummoxed, I responded, “Open it?” She smiled, took the pad back and took the stage. Nikita Schanzenbach followed this introduction by taking the stage and delighting the crowd with a very inspired stand-up comedy routine. The material ranged from self-deprecating jokes about South Dakota to her experience as a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.
After nearly two-and-a-half hours of entertainment, Natalie Roberts finished the evening with a reading of her original poetry.
