Hamline Hockey: Men's Hockey loses in valiant effort in battle with Eau Claire
The Pipers came out with all guns blazing in the first period when they took on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Eau Claire last week. The Pipers, who have been a high-scoring team thus far in the season, racked up four goals to UW-Eau Claire’s one by the close of the first period. The Piper defense couldn’t sustain the duration of the game though, as they lost the game 5-4.
The Pipers scored four goals on six shots. On a power-play in the Pipers favor, Hamline sophomore Joe Long was assisted by sophomore forward Dustin Fulton in scoring his sixth goal of the season in only four games. Fulton has seven assists on the year. Fulton would score a goal in the closing minutes of the period.
With the score tied 1-1, Hamline scored again on another power-play goal by first-year forward Lee Joos. About nine minutes later, Lee Joos assisted first-year defenseman Cory Krogen. The goal was Krogen’s first of the year.
Hamline first-year goaltender Matt Wanvig played particularly well in the first period. Wanvig deflected 18 shots in the opening 20 minutes.
Fulton’s goal to end the period would be the last the Pipers netted in the game. After the first period, things went down hill for Hamline. The Pipers would have nine more shots for the game and none of them got past the UW-Eau Claire goaltender. Comparatively, UW-Eau Claire had 31 shots and four of them got passed Wanvig. UW-EC was aided by two power plays.
The Pipers play in the Hamline Alumni Game at Drake Arena on Nov. 24.
