It's Yay and Nay time again

YAY to fall sports. Volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s cross country. And to football for Tyler Schultz for an awesome senior year. We’re down with going to a school that’s steadily making a place for itself in one of the toughest D-III conferences in the country.

NAY to classes on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Not everyone lives in Minnesota or within reasonable driving distance of home on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Even people who live in the metro area might have to travel to get to their Thanksgiving feasts, and it is ridiculous to assume that people are able to do this on the day of Thanksgiving and still make it to their feasts on time.

YAY to professors who cancel class on Wednesday because they understand that many students need to get home. We’re sure they enjoy the extra time with their loved ones just as much as we do.

NAY to the biggest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving. We don’t understand or appreciate the craziness of shoppers on that day. Stores promote this craziness by having special sales, and most start during the wee hours of the morning. Endlessly waiting in line for hours, pushing and shoving, harried employees, annoyed customers--we can do without it. We suggest participating in the biggest shopping day of the year by recognizing Buy Nothing Day. The sales just aren’t worth the stress or the trouble.

YAY to people waiting in line for the Playstation 3 and then making a killing on eBay the next day.

NAY to people waiting in line for the Playstation 3 and then spending weeks playing games and slowly slipping from this world. As their bank accounts take a nosedive from this $600 monster, so do their GPA’s and hygiene. Sony won’t stop making PS3 any time soon.

YAY to supporting local businesses. The Midway area is rich with real-live people trying to carve a place for themselves in the world of service and retail by providing items and hospitality we want and need.

NAY to clogged up and lagging Piperline registration experiences. If the university is going to do away with the wait list and require us to use their technology, they should be prepared for the web traffic it will take to accomplish the task. We shouldn’t have to change our schedules because “server busy” screens take up time while our classes fill up. Registration should not be a crapshoot.
