Students for a free Tibet celebrates awareness week

The first Tibetan awareness week on campus was a success said Student for a Free Tibet Treasurer Matt Kitchin. “A lot of people don’t even know that Tibet was an independent country until it was invaded in 1949,” said Kitchin. The events began on Monday with a street theater depicting Tibetan protesters demanding freedom of religion and free speech being violently silenced by the Chinese government.

Other events aimed at raising awareness of the Tibet situation on campus this week included a message about solutions to the Tibet/China conflict on Tuesday. Also, on Wednesday, there was a public viewing of Seven Years in Tibet. The week concluded on Friday with the cultural dance show.

Although awareness has been raised this last week, it is only the first step, Kitchin said. The Students for a Free Tibet chapter hopes to be involved in direct action in the future, according to Kitchin. “First we need to make people aware of the problem, then we can do direct action.”
