Volleyball

The volleyball season ended a very successful season with a first-round playoff loss to St. Thomas last week. Now that the season has concluded, the Pipers are starting to get credit for their unlikely season.

Senior middle hitter Dana Lukien was recognized for her stellar season by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) last Wednesday. Lukien was rewarded All-Central Region honorable mention by the AVCA.

Lukien, a four year starter for Hamline volleyball, topped off her career with 1,169 kills and became the sixth Piper to rack up 1,000 or more kills for a career.

Men’s Hockey

Last week, the Piper men’s hockey team began their long season. The Pipers trekked all the way to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica. In a high scoring game, Hamline lost 4-6.

The game was a stalemate at the beginning of the third period. Seven seconds into the period, sophomore Joe Long scored his second goal of the game for the Pipers. St. Scholastic, didn’t wait long to turn the tables, though. With the score 4-3, the Saints went on a scoring binge. Despite having 29 saves on the game, the six shots that Piper goaltender first-year Matt Wanvig let past him made the difference in the game.

The very next night, the Pipers were in Superior to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Facing off against the Yellow Jackets was no easy task. Superior is the tenth ranked team in the country, according to the USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online). The game was another high scoring contest, but not for the Pipers.

After three periods of shutout hockey, UW-Superior came out on top, 6-0. Although the Pipers were shutout, it wasn’t from a lack of trying. The Yellow Jacket’s goaltender had 35 saves on the night. St. Scholastica, on the other hand, scored six goals on the night and split them evenly amongst the first and second periods. In the losing effort, Hamline’s junior goaltender Todor Petkov had 33 saves on the night. Petkov had 15 saves in the final period.

On Nov. 24, the Pipers will participate in the Hamline Alumni game.

Women’s Hockey

The Pipers began their season on Nov. 4 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. After three periods of play and overtime, the Pipers tied 2-2.

Things looked bleak for Hamline at the start of the third period. The Pipers trailed UW-River Falls 0-2. With less than two minutes to play in third the Pipers rallied to amass two goals, tying the game.

Near the end of regulation play, the Pipers pulled their goalie and took advantage of the power-play. At the 18:22 mark of the third period, two first year players gave a glimpse of how good they can be for the Pipers. First-year Melanie Leveille was assisted by first-year Sophie Davidson to lessen the deficit. About a minute later, junior Brianna Miller assisted junior Emily Dusold to tie the game at two-even.
Sophomore Crystal Testolin played very well for the Pipers. As goalkeeper, Testolin was busy all night as she had 51 saves on the night.

The very next night, the Pipers were back at work in their home season opener. Lake Forest was in town to take on Hamline and the result was not nearly as satisfying as a tie for Piper fans. In a high-scoring game for both teams, the Pipers fells to the Foresters 5-3.

Hamline scored first in the first period when sophomore Kate Raasch assisted first-year Amanda Finstad on the goal. The Foresters nullified the goal by scoring five minutes later on a power play. Raasch would score later in the second period.

At the start of the third period, the Pipers were trailing 4-2. Thirty seconds into the period, Hamline junior Brianna Miller scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Finstad, bringing the score to 3-4. It wasn’t enough though, as the Pipers didn’t score in the remaining minutes of the game. Lake Forest would score once more in the closing minutes of the period.

The season continues on Nov. 17 against St. Benedict. The contest is home and will be held at Drake Arena. The game starts at 7:15 p.m.
