Football loses to Augsburg at Dome

Staff Writer

In their final game of the season, the Hamline football team blew an early 3-0 lead and fell 28-17 to the previously winless Augsburg Auggies last Thursday night in front of an estimated 3,000 fans at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Hamline’s inefficiency inside their opponents’ 20-yard line proved to be the difference. Even though the total yardage was nearly even for both teams, Piper quarterback Chad Schmigel, junior, threw three interceptions and HU turned the ball over several times inside the red zone, leading Augsburg to victory on their senior night. Augsburg plays one game at the Metrodome each year.

The win allowed the Auggies (1-9) to retain the Hammer Trophy, which they have held each of the last four years. Last season, Augsburg eked out a 19-13 win in double overtime. Hamline finished the season at 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the MIAC.
