Found in the Crowd

With the sights, sounds and smells of the Fall Fair surrounding us, we mingled and meandered through the Giddens Learning Center to find someone willing to be our interviewee. We knew we would have to seek this person out; he or she would not come to us. Our attention was grabbed by the booth modeling the idea of the popular postsecret.blogspot.com and we had to stop. There, we found secrets of all kinds on sticky notes posted on the board. We also found a young woman named Abby Neisius.

Hannah Kuether/Oracle: Hi! You’re a freshman, right? What is your FYSEM about?

AN: Yes, I am. We use writing to help us with bad things in our lives, I guess.

O: Fun, did you decorate the booth here?

AN: Well, it was an activity we did with a speaker; we usually write in a journal or if we have writing activities in class we write in a notebook. Like today, we had prompts. [The first was] “If I could fly...” and you wrote what you could do if you could fly. “If I could only crawl...” and you answered that. It was really interesting to see the differences. Sometimes we read aloud.

O: Cool! Who’s your professor?

AN: Carolyn Holbrook.

O: Do you like her?

AN: Yeah. It’s a good class, I really like the class. It’s very interesting.

O: So, the class is called "Writing Through Darkness" and it's about healing through writing?

AN: Basically. Healing through the arts.

O: Do you journal anyway, on your own?

AN: No.

O: Do you have to keep a journal for this class?

AN: We have journal assignments, but you don’t have to keep your own.

O: I’ve tried before, I wasn’t very successful.

AN: I did the middle school journal, you know, “I went to school today.”

O: Me too. Why did you take this class?

AN: I thought it was going to be more the psychological aspects of using writing for healing, and I want to study that, but it’s not. But it’s still okay! It’s interesting and enjoyable.

O: Good. Have you had a chance to look around the fair yet?

AN: A little.

O: Which booth is your favorite?

AN: [pause] Ours, because I like to read the secrets. It keeps it interesting to see what new secrets are up.

O: Do you read postsecret online?

AN: Yes. I love it.
