University radio station all tuned up
Turn down the iTunes and turn up HU Radio. Hamline’s independent radio station is back and streaming online. With new equipment, DJs and tunes, HU Radio is bigger then ever before and ready to rock campus.
The program has suffered subpar leadership and lost close to $1,000 in stolen equipment in the last couple of years. Despite this struggle, the program has been reestablished by the hard work of junior Tony Brunner and fellow students.
The reestablishment of the program has brought about a lot of change. The new HU Radio is accessible via the Internet, in the past it was only accessible through cable television. The streaming of shows over the Internet not only makes it easier for Hamline students to listen, but also allows the program to reach a much wider audience, Tony Brunner explained.
Brunner didn’t know how many people listen to the station, however, he said some RAs said whole floors are listening. It was also mentioned that because of the ability to broadcast over the Internet the new HU Radio has added to its following fans from all over the country.
“The growth in the program this year has been huge”, says Tony Brunner. The continued growth of the program is one of the hopes Brunner and his fellow staff members have for the future. They would like to see HU Radio become a more integrated part of the campus life, with it becoming a form of cross-campus communication.
The program doesn’t have an official university website, but it can be accessed online. The revamped program consists of 18 shows that air at various times through out the week. They span a variety of genres such as rap, indie, metal, and reggae. In the future, the hope is to add talk shows.
