Found in the Crowd

Linda Sjostrom/Oracle: So...word is that you have some controversial material up on websites.

Barb Heath: Yeah, I have a lot of boob shots [laughs]. I think people are too prudish about that kind of stuff and it pisses me off, frankly, so...I didn’t start out trying to advertise that type of stuff, but if I know it can start people talking, then I’ll do it. And plus, I really hate Facebook now, so I’m just gonna keep posting stuff.

O: Do you have any hobbies?

BH: During the summer I skate, but that’s kind of retired for the season. Um, I was learning guitar last year during the winter, I might do that again. But mostly during my spare time I just sleep and eat. And smoke. Not in that order.

O: What do you play on guitar?

BH: I can play about three different chords and I was just, like, trying to just get really good at playing them and I never learned any songs. I played flute in high school and that was kind of like music overload.

O: Did you play it all four years?

BH: Yeah.

O: Do you ever play it any more?

BH: Uhh, not so much. I brought it to school freshman year, and it kind of sat in the closet.

O: What are you studying?

BH: Philosophy and English with a concentration in Creative Writing.

O: Why’d you decide to go into that?

BH: I don’t know, when you get to Hamline they’re like, ‘Take a whole bunch of different classes and sample around,’ so I took a bunch of philosophy classes and then I ended up having so many by the end of my sophomore year that I just made it amajor. So that was sort of accidental. I’m really in with not making money [laughs], so I think those are cool majors.

O: Absolutely. So you’ve sworn off Facebook. Is that because...I heard you were getting a lot of flak from one of the groups.

BH: Yeah, I went on the Ultimate Facebook Project group, and I told them their group was just another copycat group trying to get a lot of members. And that pissed a lot of people off, so I just ran with it and had a lot of fun with it. A lot of people got mad and they started a hate group against me, and I think the girl that started that is now banned from Facebook as well.

O: It sounds like some people took that a little too seriously.

BH: Yeah. I actually got some various e-mails where people were like swearing at me from Facebookčthey made it clear that they were from Facebook. They’d leave me very nasty voicemails and send me, like, 50 messages a day and stuff like that.

O: How did you feel about that?

BH: I thought it was funny. It didn’t really bother me, but yeah, it gave me something to do in my down time. Just reply to all these messages. Reply to all the pokes. Like, they started a Poke Barb Heath campaign, so I’d have like three hundred pokes a day.

O: [pause] Oh, my.

BH: Yeah. I’d just sit at work when nobody was coming in and be like, ‘Poke... poke.’

O: Man. Did you get any death threats or anything?

BH: No, no. Serious ones [laughs]? I don’t think so. But there were some words exchanged.

O: Is there anything else you want the Hamline crowd to know, either about yourself or life views?

BH: I think everybody just needs to chill out.
