Men's soccer drops second game in a row

Men's soccer came out of the gates with all guns blazing to start the season. Through the first nine games of the year, the men were undefeated. The Pipers are starting to come back down to earth with their play lately though as they have lost three of their last five games, after Wednesday's loss to Gustavus.

On Oct. 18, the Pipers welcomed Gustavus, of the MIAC, to Hamline's campus. The result was not pretty for Hamline. With the victory, the Gusties remain in first place of the conference. Gustavus improved their record to (7-1) in the MIAC and (12-1-1) overall, while Hamline fell to (5-2-1) in conference play and (10-3-1) overall.

With less than seven minutes remaining in the first half, Gustavus scored on a corner kick. The Gusties scored their second goal 89 minutes into the match. It was an open-net score.

It can't be said that the Pipers weren't trying though. Hamlines offense mounted several scoring opportunities but the Gustavus goalkeeper proved to be a formidable opponent. The Gustie goalkeeper stopped three shots on goal during the games and Gustavus was out shot 10-9.

The Pipers taken on St. Olaf, at St. Olaf today. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Women's soccer falls to St. Benedict

The season is slipping away fast for the last place Piper Women's Soccer team. Hamline suffered their latest loss at the hands of St. Benedict. On Oct. 14, Hamline was shut out by the Blazers, 1-0, at Pat Paterson Fields. The Blazers scored the only goal of the game and it came 90 minutes into the bout.

The Pipers missed opportunities to save the game in the second half. Hamline managed to fire off five shots in the second half alone. For the game, though, Hamline was outshot by the Blazers 26-6. On the day, Hamline goalkeeper Samantha Winkelman had a lot more work booted her way than the Blazer goalkeeper. Winkelman made 18 saves, while St. Benedicts only had one save in the contest.

The sixth place Blazers, improved their record (7-5-1) overall and (4-4) in the MIAC. Conversely, the Pipers record deteriorated to (1-7) in the MIAC and (2-8-1) overall.
The season is coming to a close quickly for the Piper women. There are only three games left in the season and only two are against MIAC opponents. The conference's final standings are beginning to shape up, as first place Concordia has already clinched a playoff spot.

Next up, Hamline will take on St. Olaf, on Oct. 25. Game time, at Pat Paterson Field, is set for 1:00 p.m.

Bristow places17th, cross country fifth

The MIAC Championships begin on Oct. 28 and the Men's Cross Country team is getting ready. Hamline finished in fifth place out of 31 teams at the Jim Brews Invitational on Oct. 14. The strong finish caught the eye of the USTFCCCA, as the Pipers moved up this weeks USTFCCCA poll from seventh to fifth. Even more impressive, the Pipers were one of only two schools that were not from D-I to finish in the top five. Senior Travis Bristow has run well all year and has been a constant leader for the Pipers. It was an eight-kilometer course that Bristow finished in 24:55 to finish 17th overall.

The Pipers are no strangers to the MIAC Championships. They won the conference last year. They will defend their title next week at Como Park.

Schrupp leads women's cross country

The Tori Neubauer Invitational was held in La Crosse, Wisconsin on Oct. 14. The Hamline Women's Cross Country team was there and finished well. The Pipers placed 19th out of 28 teams, during the 6-kilometer race. Senior Lacee Schrupp ran well, as she has much of the year, was the first Piper across the finish line and she came in 26th. Schrupp finished the race in 22:53. The next Piper to cross the finish line was senior Melissa Francis. Francis finished 76th, less than 1:30 after Schrupp. The Pipers are now looking forward to competing in the MIAC Championships on Oct. 28. The event is held at Como Park.
