Officer advocates personal safety
In response to recent security incidents, Safety and Security employee Jeff Clark decided to take the initiative and do something about it. His solution was to pitch an idea for a self-defense course to Kelly Krebs, the director of student activities and leadership development.
The result is the creation of a six-week course, taught by Clark, who is trained in self-defense, and is slated to take place on Tuesday nights from 6-7 p.m. starting Oct. 31 and running through Dec. 1.
“With some of the security issues and incidents there have been lately [he thought] there would be some interest,” Krebs said.
The course will be geared toward beginners and will focus on basic self-defense techniques such as striking and blocking, escapes from front and rear holds, falling technique and basic holds and will be taught in a non-combative manner.
Clark wouldn’t say that campus is unsafe or any less safe than anywhere else.
Clark attributed the clump of incidents to the law of averages and not to a decrease in the level of safety.
Clark said that the number one thing students can do to remain safe is to change their outlook.
“Your attitude, self-awareness, and confidence will go much further than any technical skills,” said Clark.
He said he wants to accomplish this by getting students used to being attacked or held in class.
“The purpose of this course will be to arm students and staff with tools to protect themselves in the event of a physical attack,” Clark said in a written proposal to Krebs.
Space is limited to 30 students for this semester, but if demand is high they will consider bringing it back next semester and possibly expanding it.
Sign-ups are in the Student Center lobby. The cost is $10. Students are expected to wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.
