Found in the Crowd
Hannah Kuether/Oracle: Hi! How is your senior year going so far?
Chris Chamberlain: I’m really busy, much busier than other years. I didn’t think it’d slow down, but I didn’t think it’d speed up.
O: What are you majoring in?
CC: Biology and psychology.
O: Why biology and psychology?
CC: Psychology because I thought I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I picked biology because to be a psychologist you need to go to medical school. Then I decided I didn’t want to go to medical school and I didn’t want to be a psychiatrist, but I really liked biology so I stuck with it.
O: Why did you want to be a psychiatrist?
CC: I don’t know. I took a psychology class in high school and I thought it was pretty sweet. I knew I wanted an occupation where I could help people and I guess I thought the best way to do that was psychiatry. Then, when I realized what it takes to be a psychiatristčno.
O: What are you planning on doing after you get these degrees?
CC: The psychology degree will be used in a general life sense... I plan to go to grad school in an area you would call molecular biology or molecular genetics. I want to do research on neurodegenerative disorders, like muscular dystrophy (MD).
O: Why are you interested in this area?
CC: I have two brothers with MD, and they were diagnosed when I was about 15. This meant that I all of a sudden had opportunities at my fingertips to be involved in the Muscular Dystrophy Association, so I’ve spent a week out of every summer for the last six years at a camp for youth with MD. I’ve worked a lot with people who have the disorder. It really interests me. I want to go into research because I really enjoy doing actual science research, and this is the way I can combine two areas I’m passionate about.
O: What do you do in your free time?
CC: Work at the admissions office and do research in the biology department [laughs].
O: Do you ever leave campus?
CC: Occasionally. I watch movies. I like to watch movies.
O: You’re not really a big TV person?
CC: No, I don’t really like commercials.
O: Have you ever thought about investing in a TiVo?
CC: Yeah, I have. But I’m too cheap. I don’t think I’d know how to program it, those things have always confused me. I’d get frustrated and I would be very angry. I just avoid stress.
O: There are instruction manuals.
CC: I don’t like taking time to read them. And even when I do, I still usually don’t, I mean, I can’t, I mean, they’re not very clear. You go to the menu and there are so many options.
O: What’s your favorite TV show? Do you like Grey’s Anatomy?
CC: Yeah, it’ s all right. I watched the whole first season in one day. That’s embarassing. But I like Family Guy, I like Seinfeld, they’re pretty good.
O: What should Hamline know about you?
CC: Oh, come on! What can I say to this question that is not so ¤ber-cliche? Oh! How about this! Maybe...
O: Go ahead.
CC: I was talking with a friend the other day, and we were talking about how sometimes it’s okay to fly below the radar. Like, it’s okay to not be involved in things that are super visible. It’s okay to fly below the radar, I like that.
