Framework members announced
Nearly five weeks after the Strategic Planning Framework leads were announced at Convocation, the Frameworks have announced their members [see sidebar for complete list].
The announcement came from the Strategic Planning Team chair Ed Butterfoss via an e-mail to the student body.
Two of the four Framework Groups have student representation. The other four do not.
Barbara Swanson, who leads the Fulfilling the Promise Framework, said she is trying to find a student for her Framework.
“We haven’t found anyone yet from those who have volunteered,” Swanson said. One issue, Swanson said, was finding a student who can attend the Framework’s meeting. Swanson’s Framework group meets on Friday afternoons from 1-2:30 p.m.
The content of the university’s strategic planning website was recently put behind password protection. Above the username and password fields, there is a drop-down context menu. No direction is given on which option students should select.
However, students can login using their Netmail username and password and by leaving the drop-down menu at default.
Butterfoss and John Pyle, associate vice president for university planning, said the move was made to keep other institutions from viewing the university’s processes and progress.
The move puts Hamline in line with the practices of other MIAC colleges. The College of St. Catherine’s strategic plan information is also password protected.
The the Framework group members, meeting schedule, minutes, presentations, comments and the Strategic Planning Team are password protected.
What is Strategic Planning?
Strategic planning is a process of defining objectives and laying out a process to reach those goals under a certain timeline. Working from the ground up, the six Framework teams, each comprised of12 to 15 people, gather input and data from the campus community. They work with the Strategic Planning Team (SPT), who will guide the planning process. Framework leads serve on the SPT, and the SPT is chaired by Professor of Law Ed Butterfoss. The SPT then works with the University Leadership Team, who will deliver the plan to the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees (SPC). The SPT will focus on aligning the plan with the university’s mission, promise and operating principles. The SPC provides planning expertise and will make final recommendations before the plan is approved by the full Board.
Why should I care?
Strategic Planning, once implemented in the next academic year, will guide the university through growth and institutional development over the next five years. In addition, as Professor Andy Rundquist said, the plan will be evaluated every year to determine where the university wants to be five years from now. That way, Rundquist said, the plan is a living document.
