Voting pre-registration ends Tuesday; election Nov. 7
Today is the deadline for voter pre-registration in Minnesota. Registration cards are available at the Sorin Info. Desk, Student Center Front Desk and CLA Dean’s office. Return the cards to the Office of Service Learning and Volunteerism in Bush Student Center.
If you are not voting in St. Paul, info about non-Minnesota and absentee balloting is available on OSLV’s Election Action webpage. If you miss today’s deadline, don’t panic. Minnesota is one of the few places that accepts same-day registration at the polling offices with proper ID.
Chop off locks for a dollar
After a one-year hiatus, Locks of Love returns to Hamline to provide wigs for children ages eight to 18 undergoing chemotherapy.
To make it easy, accessible and fun for students, the university has designed a raffle to raise money as well as donate hair. The three winners of the raffle get to cut off the hair of one of the three donators.
Senior Oren Robashkin is spearheading the project.
“It’s hard to get people to even donate a dollar,” Robashkin said, explaining that most people simply shrug and say they are “poor college students.”
“I really just try to get people to listen to what it’s all about,” Robashkin said.
The process requires roughly 14 ponytails to make one wig, Oren said, “so we’re trying to get pledges to do it again this spring.”
Tickets are $1 and can be purchased in the Sorin lobby.
HIRC participation increases
The newly-elected Hamline Inter-Residence Council presidents are seeking to better serve as a voice for the student body this year.
The council, headed by senior Martin Staehnke, is not only offering more opportunities for first-year participation this year, but is also trying to become a more formidable force in the university’s decision making process.
“Right now we’re working really hard to be more of a voice for the residents,” said Staehnke. “Our [attendees] have already grown from three or four last year to almost twenty this year.”
The meetings are designed to hear and discuss any residency issues or concerns brought up by students. The most current topic is whether or not students should have card access to all dorms.
Meeting are held every Thursday in the GLC during convocation hour.
