Football keeps "Old Paint Bucket"

On Sept. 30, the Pipers took on the Macalester football club at Klas Field in front of a crowd of nearly 900 spectators. Whenever the Pipers and the Scots lock horns, they play for more than bragging rights. Last week Hamline beat Macalester 35-7; the victory allowed Hamline to retain the coveted “Old Paint Bucket” trophy for the 19th time in the last 20 matchups between the two schools.

The Pipers dominated all facets of the game. The Scots didn’t score their first and last touchdown until the third quarter; an improvement from 2005 when the Pipers beat the Scots 54-0. The Piper defense didn’t give Macalester much to work with. In 45 rushing attempts from the Scots, they only gained 52 rushing yards. The defense even helped out the offense by scoring a touchdown. Senior cornerback Patrick Robinson intercepted a Macalester pass and returned the catch for a 99-yard touchdown; the record for longest interception touchdown is 101 yards. The Piper offense made the most out of defensive stops. The Pipers turned scored 3 Macalester turnovers into three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Piper quarterback James Leary completed 8 of 13 passing attempts for 94 yards and one touchdown pass to receiver Ben Ganske. Also, senior defensive lineman Darryl Sledge was named to D3football.com’s Team of the Week, last week. Sledge had 2.5 sacks and 6 tackles against the Scots. The victory against the non-MIAC Scots improves the Pipers’ season record to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC. On Oct. 14, the Pipers travel to Northfield to take on a middle-of-the-road Carleton squad. The MIAC match up will kick off at 1 p.m.

Men’s Cross Country ranked 12th

As of last week, the men’s cross country team at Hamline is ranked 12th in the country. The Pipers are currently the highest ranked MIAC school in the USTFCCCA national polls. St. John’s is the next closest at 19.

Hamline finished sixth in the Roy Griak Invitational two weekends ago. Sixth place is the highest finish for any Hamline team ever to compete at the Invitational. Piper senior Travis Bristow had a stellar finish at the invitational. Bristow finished the eight-kilometer course in 26:15. Bristow came in tenth overall and his performance earned him the honor of being named MIAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
On Oct. 14, the Pipers will travel to University of Wisconsin (La Crosse) for the Jim Drews Invitational. The event begins at 10 a.m.

Women’s Cross Country finish 13th

Hamline’s Women’s Cross Country team also competed at the Roy Griak Invitational two weekends ago. The Pipers ran their way to a respectable finish at the Invitational, held at the University of Minnesota campus. Out of the 32 Division III schools that participated in the invitational, Hamline finished in 13th place. Carleton finished first in the team competition and St. Thomas placed second. Senior Melissa Francis and Lacee Schrupp led the way for the Pipers. Francis was the fastest Piper of the day, as she placed 27th with a time of 24:26. Schrupp came in 29th, as she finished the six-kilometer race in a time of 24:31.

On Oct. 14, the women’s team will travel to University of Wisconsin (La Crosse) for the Tori Neubauer Invitational. The event begins at 11 a.m.
