Volleyball continues solid MIAC play

Sports Editor

The Piper Volleyball squad is having a very solid year while playing in a very talented MIAC conference this year.

Although Hamline was predicted in preseason coaches’ polls to finish near the bottom of the conference, the team has maintained an above .500 record for much of the season. On Sept. 30, Hamline volleyball played two matches in Decorah, Iowa. At the Luther Triangular, the Pipers beat their host, Luther, as well as Waldorf. In the first game of the day, Hamline defeated Luther 30-26, 24-30, 22-30, 30-27, 15-12. Hamline senior Dana Lukien had 18 kills in the game; she is eighth in the MIAC with 104 kills. With her performance against Luther, Lukien moved into fifth all-time in Hamline’s record books for kills. Lukien, a four-year starter for Hamline, has 1,053 in her career and only needs 58 more to move into fourth place in the record books. She averages 3.85 kills per game. Senior Shelby Hyllengren chimed in with 13 kills of her own against Luther. Senior libero Jenna Witt added 18 digs. Witt, also a four year starter, only needs 123 more digs to become Hamline’s all-time digs leader. She has 1600 digs for her career.

In the second match of the day, Pipers defeated Waldorf in four games, 30-27, 25-30, 30-25, 30-17. Luiken contributed in a major way, once again, as she led Hamline, will 11 kills and 11 blocks. Hyllengren added 10 kills for the Hamline.

On Oct. 3, the Pipers played Concordia at Hutton Arena. The Cobbers took care of Hamline heavy-handedly as they swept the Pipers 31-29, 30-15, 30-23. Becca Shane of Concordia led the way for the Cobbers with 21 kills. Concordia has been a top the MIAC standings all year and were predicted in preseason coaches poll to win the conference. Hamline had the Cobbers on the ropes in the first game. The Pipers had an 18-13 lead as they were serving for game point at 29-28 before the Cobbers woke up and rallied for three straight points to finish the game.

Piper volleyball continues MIAC play this week at home. On Oct. 11, a mediocre Carleton team comes to Hutton Arena. The match begins at 7 p.m. On Oct. 13, the Pipers play a last place St. Catherine team, also at home. The St. Catherine match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
