Get your checkmate on
Looking for the next pawn star, a handful of chess enthusiasts gathered around 64 checkered squares last Tuesday night.
In the foreground, sophomore Nick Svoboda, left, brought out his king-side knight against sophomore Dylan Wright. On the rear board playing black, sophomore Rob Monson and his opponent, sophomore Jesse Zager, were well into the middle game in their match.
Last year, Svoboda and Wright were playing chess in Sorin’s lobby when many closet chess players asked the pair if Hamline had a chess club. “No,” they said, and decided to start a club.
The chess club meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights in the Klas Center. Those interested should bring a board.
