Found in the Crowd with Christopher Gare
O: Tell me a little bit about yourself.
CG: I’m 21 years old. I’m in the middle of my sophomore and junior years because I started in the middle of the year; I’m an international student from Germany. I’ve been in the United States for about three years now, and I like it.
O: Do you miss Germany?
CG: Sometimes. When I’m here I miss Germany; when I’m in Germany I miss the United States. There are things I miss about both places, I guess.
O: What are you going to school here for?
CG: I’m a legal studies major.
O: What do you want to do with it?
CG: I want to go to law school and probably practice law. Well, my plan right now is go to law school and become an international corporate attorney.
O: What do they do?
CG: It’s all civil. I’d like to work with a business that works both in the United States and Germany so I can use both languages.
O: I know some people say it’s hard to speak two languages, because it makes it hard to switch back and forth between the two sometimes. Do you think that’s true?
CG: Well, I kinda grew up speaking both languages so they’re both pretty natural to me, it’s not too big a problem I guess. When I talk to my mom or someone sometimes it’s hard to find the right words because my brain is in English now. But after a few days I’ll switch right back.
O: Cool. What do you do outside of school?
CG: Oh, I keep pretty busy, I have a lot of stuff to do. I have two kids, one’s nine monthsčoh, ten months old nowčand the other one is almost three. After school I pretty much take care of the kids all day and I also play baseball this semester. So I’m busy with school, kids, work (I work 20 hours a week), and baseball.
O: That must be hard to balance all of those.
CG: Eh, it’s kinda hard sometimes just trying to figure out the schedule, not having things conflict with each other. There’s only 24 hours in a day, you know? So yeah, it can get tough every once in a while, but for the most part it’s good times.
O: Is it fun to have kids?
CG: Oh yeah. I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love it. It wasn’t planned, but I’m glad the way things happened. I feel blessed.
O: Good!
CG: Yeah, it’s great. I love it. And it keeps me on track, too. I know what I’m working for. I know what I’m going to school for. I know what I have to do to be successful and provide for my kids.
O: So you’re living off campus?
CG: Yes. I live in a townhome with my girlfriend and my two kids.
O: How long have you and your girlfriend been together?
CG: About three years now. We plan on getting married pretty soon.
O: Congratulations!
CG: Thank you very much.
O: Are you excited?
CG: Yes I am. Nervous and excited [laughs]. But yeah. I’m confident that it’s gonna work.
