HUSC and Cheer Team co-sponsor Athlete Appreciation Day

It was a rain-filled and dreary day last Thursday, but it didn’t stop the barbecue. On Sept. 21, Hamline University’s Student Congress (HUSC) and Hamline’s Cheer Team joined forces to appreciate the athletes on campus.

Over 500 invitations were dispersed via Facebook and the date was marked in everyone’s student planner. The event was officially coined “Athlete Appreciation Day.” Over 70 athletes, coaches, students, and faculty convened around the statue of Leonidas Hamline around 11:30 a.m. to pay tribute to Hamline Athletics and to dine on free grilled hamburgers, chips, and soda. Though invites were issued, the event was open to anyone who was willing to brave the weather.

“It was great to see many of my comrades enjoying themselves despite the crummy weather,” said Hamline tennis player Casey O’Donnell, who was in attendance.

The barbecue was the fruit of two student organizations working together. HUSC provided the funds and supplies for the event; the Cheer Team provided the manpower. HUSC representatives were present and Cheer Team leaders could be seen flipping burgers and pouring drinks.

The Athlete Appreciation Day is one of three that will be coming up in the next few weeks. HUSC will be collaborating with other student organizations in order to host Fine Art Appreciation and Advocacy Group Appreciation Days. These events are an effort of HUSC’s to get exposure for all the groups on campus. There are quite a few groups on campus and so not enough people involved to make all the groups successful; therefore HUSC is trying a “strength in numbers” approach to promotion of student organizations.

“HUSC is trying to group more people together, to get more organizations helping other organizations on campus and highlighting a lot of the other groups on campus that don’t always noticed or don’t receive the most support,” said Sarah Elston, HUSC Public Relations Executive Board Committee Chair.

Although the Fall Athletic season is still very fresh, Hamline’s teams are already off to a great start. Soccer is having a stellar season thus far and football, volleyball, and cross country are all playing well. Student attendance at games has also been significantly increased from years past. Hamline football’s first home game occurred before classes started and before most students arrived on campus. Even though the game was so early in the year, 836 fans were in attendance.

“I was impressed with the turnout at our first home game,” said Cameron Bliss, tight end for the football Pipers, who also was in attendance last Thursday. “We expect more next week too,” Bliss went on.
