Strategic Planning Team begins filling Framework grops

News Editor

The Strategic Planning Team (SPT) began filling the six Framework teams (which will develop the university’s strategic plan) with members at their first meeting last Tuesday. Physics Prof. Andy Rundquist, who leads the Distinctive Learning and Teaching Environment Framework, said about 80 percent of the framework positions are filled. However, that figure is pending on whether those selected will accept, Rundquist said.

To fill the frameworks, Rundquist said, faculty and staff volunteered to serve or nominated people to serve on the framework teams. In addition, each framework lead brought personal lists of people they wanted on their framework. When the selection process was complete, Rundquist said, the team scanned the selected members of each framework to check not only for school diversity and representation, but a balance between faculty, staff and gender.

Rundquist declined to say who he selected, however he is in the process of calling his selections.

The time commitment may pose a problem. Rundquist said the SPT is worried people will not participate because they don’t feel like they have time. “It’s going to be a lot of work,” Prof. of Education Nancy Desmond, who is leading the Changing Realities Framework, said. “We’re being very up front [with framework members] about the time it will take.”

Although the first draft of the plan is due to the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees in February, Desmond said she doesn’t feel constricted by the timeline.

Desmond said she worked during the Education department’s recent National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) review. Desmond said she liked the university-wide aspect of the accreditation and was eager to do the same kind of work again.

“This is a good semester for me to do the work,” Desmond said.
