Found in the Crowd
Britta Hetzel, First-year
Oracle/Linda Sjostrom: So what are you up to today?
Britta Hetzel: Well, I got done with class around 2:20-ish, then I was tutoring at Hancock until 3, and now I’m just out here enjoying the nice weather.
O: How long have you been with Hancock?
BH: Today was my first day, actually.
O: How did it go?
BH: It went well, it was really fun. I was working in a sixth grade class. It was a little hectic because two kids were having their birthday today and they were having a party, but it was really fun.
O: So is it a general class you tutor instead of an individual student?
BH: Yep, it’s Ms. Walsh’s sixth-grade class and I’m just in there to kind of help out with whatever they’re doing that day. I’m supposed to be helping with writing, but really it’s whatever they’re working on the day that I’m there.
O: Do you like it so far?
BH: I like it a lot. I think it will be a really good experience getting to know all the kids and giving back to the community. Going over to the school is really fun, just to see all the different kids and to work with them, whether they’re learning English as a second language and are struggling with keeping up with the other kids or just the average kid needing help with daily work.
O: So you just moved from Eau Claire? Is it a big change?
BH: You know, being on campus it isn’t, but once you get out into the city it is. I was just reading the Pioneer Press and it was like, “Oh what do you guys want to do, there’s so much going on this weekend.”
O: Do you have certain events you like to go to?
BH: I really like to go to different music shows,
be it jazz, or folk, or whatever else is going on that weekend. I’ve gone down to the Dakota Jazz Club a few times to see different artists play down there, and that’s always fun and I really like doing that.
O: Do you play jazz at all?
BH: I did in high school. I sang with the jazz band at Eau Claire Memorial, but I’m not doing anything here as of yet.
O: Are you looking at any clubs or anything yet?
BH: I’m in lacrosse. We had our first practice last night. I wanted to play it safe for a semester and make sure to not get in too over my head, because in high school I just did a ton of stuff. But I’ve talked to a few people about the student government on campus and possibly getting involved with that next semester or in second year. I like to knit, I hear there’s a knitting group, so we’ll see.
O: Lacrosse and knitting, that’s an interesting mix.
BH: Yeah, I think so. I swam for a really long time, but I can’t anymorečtoo many injuries. But lacrosse I think is going to be really fun and I really like the girls on the team. I’ve never played it, but it seems to come pretty fast.
O: What type of injuries did you get?
BH: Well, I had tendonitis in both shoulders which just comes from overuse, and then knee issues. Injuries are really common in girls’ swimming, because your bodies aren’t made for the kind of workouts you’re doing.
O: Do you like Hamline so far?
BH: Yeah, it was my first choice of colleges that I applied to. I came in January and talked with Professor George Gaetano of the Communications department. He was hilarious and pretty much sold me on Hamline. I liked the idea that my major wouldn’t have to be exactly what my career would end up being; it was more about gaining the experience to help me with many different fields.
