Three new directors running res. halls
Behind the new information desk in Sorin Hall lies Lamar Shingles’ office. Inside, several boxes balanced on top of each other against a blank wall. “I’m still moving in,” he explains. Shingles, the new hall director for Manor and Sorin, is one of three new hall directors.
Last year’s hall directors for Sorin and Manor, the Heights and Drew were all promoted to various, higher positions. Chris Rasinen is at Carleton, Robin Riley-Casey returned to her alma mater Ohio State, and Sharonda Pugh is now MISA’s assistant director.
Most hall directors do not stay very long in the entry-level position. “A hall director’s life expectancy is typically one to three years,” said Associate Director of Residential Life Javier Gutierrez.
Residential Life began searching for new hall directors last February. By the end of March, new hall directors were being hired, and in July they were trained.
Above all, Residential Life looks for a passion to work with students above all else in hall director candidates, Gutierrez said.
Besides being driven to work with students, Gutierrez said it is important that hall directors represent the whole student body, as means of staying committed to diversity. Other than that, Gutierrez said administrative and communication skills are also important.
A recent graduate from Central Michigan University, the position is Shingles’ first full-time job.
“I hope to serve students in every capacity I can, given my position,” Shingles said.
