Roiger named MIAC player of the week

Sports Editor

Josh Roiger has been the ultimate utility player for the Piper baseball team. He has experienced much success on the mound while amassing a 7-1 record. Roiger has given the Hamline coaching staff the kind of problem that coaches want to have. Verdugo and company have been creative with lineups, trying to get Roiger’s bat in the lineup on days when he is not pitching. He is so valuable to the Piper offense that besides pitching, he has started games in the outfield and the infield. Roiger leads the MIAC in triples and was named MIAC Pitcher of the Week last week.

“When you think of all the people that could have been selected, it’s an honor,” says Athletic Director Dan O’Brien. “It’s a well deserved honor for Josh,” O’Brien went on.

He led the Pipers to a 3-2 victory over St. Thomas two weeks ago, not an easy task. In the second game of a doubleheader, the first place Tommies were held to four hits and two runs. Roiger struck out six batters against the conference-leading offense. The victory meant a season split with the Tommies. He shut down the Concordia Cobbers to secure Hamline’s first ever playoff berth last weekend. His play this year has made him a dangerous player for opposing MIAC teams but perhaps the scariest thing about Josh Roiger is that he is only a sophomore.

Roiger is now just one win away from Hamline’s all-time win record for pitching. The record was set in 1983 at eight games and was tied in 2003.
