Under the Covers
Dear Under the Covers,
My girlfriend’s been nagging me to trim my pubic hair. Are there any tips you can give me so I can groom that area safely?
Untamed Wilderness
Dear Untamed Wilderness,
There are a few ways you could go about doing this. Many people have chosen techniques that include a variety of hair removal methods including shaving, waxing, plucking or just simply trimming the hair. Of these methods, I would recommend trimming first, especially if it is your first time manscaping.
If you decide that shaving it all off is not the thing for you, make sure that you trim your hair short, but not short enough to the point of irritation. Wash the area thoroughly first. Place yourself in a good position where you can reach between your legs easily. Let the area dry for a brief moment, then snip carefully with small, sharp, sanitized scissors. Remember, you can always go shorter.
Trimming slightly damp hair can be a little easier than trimming your pubic hair while it is completely dry, especially if it’s naturally curly. As far as scissors go, a small pair of cuticle scissors work well. They are sharp and can manuever easily in those hard to reach places.
If getting rid of the whole enchilada is right for you, then shave the area. It’s cheaper than wax, and many people style their pubic hair this way. This area is very sensitive, so proceed with caution. Start by cleaning the area you are going to shave. I would also suggest that if your hair is a little long, trim it first before shaving. Then, lather on shaving cream or shaving gel. Remember to shave with a clean razor.
You can also style your pubic hair in any shape or form that you desire, just try to shave in the same direction of your hair growth. If you are ready to create a work of art out of your pubic hair, think about the type of shape you want to create. I’ve heard of people forming their hair into basic shapes, like squares and hearts. The more advanced stylist can try floral or vine-like shapes. This can be fun and entertaining, especially if your girlfriend isn’t used to seeing a smiley face shaved into your pubic area.
To help minimize razor burn after shaving, exfoliate or rewash the pubic area, then apply a moisturizer, like baby oil or Aloe Vera to the area. Fragrented lotions or oils are more likely to cause discomfort.
Make sure you are aware of how your pubic area will react to this new ‘do. When hair starts to grow back, itching and little red bumps may present themselves. If this happens, apply hydrocortisone cream and resist the urge to itch. Nobody wants to see another person scratching their genitals.
