Found in the Crowd

Angela Froemming/Oracle: As a first-year student, what do you think has been the most important thing you have learned this year?

Liz McAllister: Probably to be true to myself and trust my gut instinct. Mostly when it comes to friends, and partying, and just hanging out with certain groups of people. I’ve learned to trust myself, and only myself, when it comes to that.

O: What has been the biggest surprise for you this year?

LM: Sorin. The food is definitely a lot grosser than I thought it would be.

O: What dorm do you live in?

LM: I live in Osborn, first floor. I love it because my whole group of friends lives there.

O: Are you living on campus next year?

LM: Yes, I’m living in Drew.

O: What is something you would like to understand, but don’t?

LM: The meaning of life.

O: Do you have any theories so far?

LM: I guess we’re definitely all here for a reason. What that reason is, I’m not sure. I guess everybody should just live life to the fullest.

O: How do you live your life to the fullest?

LM: When I’m faced with a decision, I try to act on it right away, and just live in the moment. I try not to regret things. I’ve learned from my past, but I don’t live in it.

O: What is the coolest thing you have done this year?

LM: There was one night when I went on an adventure with a group of friends. We drove all the way to Red Wing and climbed the Barn Bluff at, like, midnight. It was a lot of fun, and it was beautiful.

O: If you could get mass amounts of people to believe in something, what would you have them believe?

LM: Respect. Respect for each other and everything, especially nature.

O: If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

LM: I would probably be pretty torn between Karl Marx and Elvis Costello.

O: Why those two?

LM: Well, Elvis Costello because I love his music, and I would want to understand why he wrote some of the music that he did. And Karl Marx because communism is such a twisted, skewed thing in so many cases. I think it would be really interesting to know what the true roots of it are.

O: Are you going into music or politics?

LM: Actually, those are the other things I wish I could do. I’m an art major, but I do play instruments, and I was considering a poli. sci.major.

O: What instruments do you play?

LM: I used to play the violin, but now I pretty much just play the guitar. But if you asked me to I could probably play the drum set pretty well.

O: If you could be any animal, what would you be?

LM: I would want to be an otter. They’re really playful, and they get to lounge around in the sun all day. I mean, what other animal just gets to play with sea urchins, like all the time?

O: If you could be any Disney character, who would you be?

LM: Oh boy. This is going to take me a minute. I guess it would be pretty cool to be Aladdin. Hanging out in the streets, stealing bread for little kids.

O: OK. That’s all my questions. Is there anything else you would like to add?

LM: I like airplane.

O: The movie?

LM: No. I just like airplane.
