Fulcrum's work culminates in year-end showcase

Staff Writer

The Fulcrum unveiled its 2006 art and literary journal to a packed crowd at the GLC Gallery last Friday. This spring’s annual showcase gala of the Fulcrum was an immediate success. With its free food and live music, the gala was well-prepared to present the hard work everyone gave to have this year’s Fulcrum printed.

The event was divided into two segments, with the first half of the evening devoted to the visual art portion of the Fulcrum; numerous students’ works of art decorated the walls of the gallery. These pieces varied in dimension from the average-sized single sheet of a notebook to over five feet squared. The committee-selected pieces displayed in the showcase included both photos and hand-drawn and painted works.

To go along with the art showcase, the Fulcrum hired a band to play for an hour while guests wandered around the room to observe the displays of artwork. The band, calling themselves A Night in the Box, played a self-proclaimed “punk-bluegrass” genre of music. Considering this was an art showcase, the band cleverly played music that suited the art well; the unique style of music blended nicely with the creative works presented.

The end of the art showcase gave way to the presentation of literary pieces portion of the evening. Readings were given in front of an unexpected overflow audience. Every seat was occupied, forcing people to stand against the walls. 13 writers read 15 selections of poetry and short stories with topics ranging from guardian angels to moths to the crowd, receiving respectful applause at the end of each piece.

Mackenzie Moon, editor of this year’s journal, organized the successful night. With 2006 being her fourth and final year with the Fulcrum, her hard work allowed for this journal to be printed, which may be one of the best journals the Fulcrum has issued to date.

The Fulcrum is an outlet for Hamline students to develop their skills and showcase their artistic talents to the public. The 2006 journal is available now.
